Whitewater festival makes safety a priority
Katie Spencer | KRDO TV | Jun 25th, 2016

CANON City, Colo. -

Hundreds of kayakers, rafters and paddle boarders took to the Arkansas River  in Canon City this weekend.

The annual Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival gave people a chance to spend some time out on the river.

There were many different events, including a whitewater adventure race and tubing races.

But with three water rescues so far this season, festival organizers say safety is their number one priority.

"The one thing to remember with the whitewater festival is, we're in one of the safest stretches of river you can find on the Arkansas. In this area, there is one drop that we're dealing with right now and that is at

Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival takes over Cañon City this weekend
Stephanie Earls | The Gazette | Jun 23rd, 2016

The Arkansas River begins its almost 1,500-mile journey to the Mississippi with a wild ride, dropping some 4,600 feet - in 120 miles - from headwaters near Leadville to feed Fremont County's famed whitewater corridor through the Royal Gorge.

By the time the waters arrive in Cañon City about a dozen miles to the east, they're in a different mood entirely - leveled out, calmer and pretty as a picture, you might say.

In these parts, though, the Arkansas River's not just for looking at.

"It's not enough to have a festival and have people come and watch. We encourage people to get involved and engaged," said Kyle Horne, co-chair of the annual Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival.

Spectators were treated to rafts cruising down the Arkansas River Thursday and plenty of raft battles to end the competition.

Royal Gorge Rebound: How a Wildfire Led to a New and Improved Better Than Ever Arkansas River Experience
AROA | Jun 16th, 2016

Canon City, Colo. (June 16, 2016) - Members of the Arkansas River Outfitters Association (AROA) make it their business to show guests from all over the world an exhilarating outdoor recreational experience. Their training and skills also make it possible for visitors to test themselves against the best that whitewater has to offer.
