Hayden Pass Fire hasn't slowed down tourism

As the Hayden Pass Fire burns, the scenery along the stretch of U.S. 50 between Cañon City and Salida tells two different stories.

Looking out one window, drivers can see smoke plumes rising from the fire. Advised by signs put up by the Fremont County Sheriff's Office to drive straight through Coaldale without stopping, they might see firefighters or officials from the sheriff's office driving ahead of them.

But mostly, they'll see other residents or tourists on the road. As drivers look toward the Arkansas River on the other side of the highway, they can see rafters moving along like any other summer day.

Wildlife biologist has passion for river life

It’s a fair bet to say no one knows the Arkansas River as well as Greg Policky, 33-year veteran aquatic biologist for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Though Policky has been in the public sphere for various water issues, his work is largely behind the scenes, making an impact on the Arkansas River Valley.

“A large part of what I do is to improve fishing recreation and is based in biology,” Policky said. He manages the aquatic habitat from fish to insects and amphibians – and angler regulations too.

Policky covers the Upper Arkansas River Basin, including water sources, such as lakes, streams and wetlands. He is responsible for the headwaters of the Arkansas River near Leadville east to the

Water levels perfect for Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival

The sun and crowds were out and the Arkansas River was at ideal conditions for all things whitewater at the eighth annual Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival in Cañon City.

Rafters from many local companies could be seen passing by in between the number of festival events.

Joel Hamilton, who has been announcing at the whitewater festival for four years, said that the Saturday was the "perfect" day to be out on the water.

"It's about 2,430 (cfs) at the feature," Hamilton said, pointing at the man-made rapid that flows right before the First Street Bridge.

"If the water gets too high, the wave will wash out; that's what happened to us last year," Hamilton said.
